Orphic_OE
Not an everything app. An everything-to-be app.
Orphic is a local, AI-native personal computing environment designed to grow into the particular machine one person actually needs—not every feature for everyone, but the ingredients for everything you do.
Your Orphic does not have to do everything. Just everything you do.
What that looks like on a Tuesday
Say you teach fourteen students. Every week you need the same three things at once: what each one worked on last time, the thing you meant to assign next, and somewhere to write down what actually happened while it is still fresh. No calendar, notes app, or lesson-planning service has ever held all three without you doing the joining by hand—so the joining quietly becomes your job, every week, forever.
In Orphic you say that out loud, in the room where your teaching already lives. The Familiar drafts you a lesson board: fourteen names down one side, last week's note and next week's assignment beside each, a field for today. Before it installs, it shows you exactly what the piece would be able to reach—your teaching files, and nothing else. You look at that, and you decide.
Now it opens when your teaching opens. You did not find it in a marketplace, configure it, or subscribe to the ninety percent of it you would never use. It is one board, for your fourteen students. Nobody else needs it to exist—which is precisely why nobody else was ever going to build it.
That is the whole idea, and everything below is how it works.
The egg is the promise
Most software arrives already decided. Its features, categories, appearance, workflows, and assumptions about you were fixed before you opened it. An Orphic egg is different: it carries the character and operating grammar from which a computing environment hatches.
An egg is more than a theme. It can shape typography, motion, sound, voice, transitions, defaults, refusals, spatial arrangement, and the way the system explains itself. The same underlying platform can hatch into environments that do not merely look different, but attend differently.
The egg symbolizes latent completeness. Orphic does not ship as a warehouse containing every possible feature. It ships as a place where the right features can grow.
A dwelling, fitted to one life
A running Orphic environment is a dwelling: an egg, its local configuration, its furniture, its base of trusted fixtures, and the files and instructions that give the environment its working context.
- Room
- One active arrangement: a file, conversation, browser tab, or focused working surface.
- Floor
- A related collection of rooms, analogous to a project subdirectory or domain of work.
- Dwelling
- A whole saved operating environment. One person may maintain several for materially different kinds of life and work.
- Village
- A collection of dwellings.
- City
- The wider exchange, where people can share eggs and furniture without collapsing them into one mandatory arrangement.
An egg may shape an entire dwelling or narrow its character at the floor, room, or individual-amenity level.
The amenities inside
An amenity is one capability a person can use within a dwelling. Amenities come in two kinds. The distinction is about ownership and lifecycle, not importance.
Fixtures
Integral, trusted parts of the dwelling: plumbed in and owned by Orphic's core. Fixtures may provide storage, mediate the filesystem, carry transport connections, or enforce the human approval gate. The Obelisk—Orphic's chat input—is a fixture. Fixtures mount with the environment because everything else needs stable ground to stand on.
Furniture
Movable, sandboxed amenities owned by the egg and fitted to a person's own work. Furniture can be summoned, dismissed, rearranged, adopted, repaired, or replaced. A calendar, research concordance, studio console, project dashboard, teaching tool, or workflow nobody has named yet can become furniture.
The AI within Orphic is the Familiar. It talks with you, works within the dwelling's declared boundaries, and can help tend the system itself: explaining an egg, repairing a broken skill, proposing a change, or helping build new furniture.
The furniture-builder
The furniture-builder is the feature that keeps Orphic from needing every feature at first boot. Describe the thing your work is missing; the Familiar helps turn that need into a small amenity made for your exact use case.
Furniture is built in isolation, previewed before installation, and explicit about what it needs. The person sees its capabilities and chooses whether to bring it into the dwelling. The Familiar may author the proposal, but it cannot install its own code, approve its own requests, or silently enlarge what a piece may do.
People who do not want to build their own furniture can use the city: an exchange for eggs and pre-built furniture made by other users and by Modelwright Studio. A shared piece remains separate from the permissions and private material of the dwelling receiving it.
Power without ambient trust
Useful personal software eventually needs meaningful power. Orphic furniture may be granted access to files, terminals, networks, or model tools—including broad access when a person knowingly wants it—but that power is never an automatic property of being furniture.
Sandboxed furniture asks trusted fixtures to act through a narrow, inspectable broker. A grant is bound to the particular piece, its content revision, the dwelling and scope where it is installed, the operations it may request, and the lifetime of the grant. Updating the piece does not smuggle old permission into new code. Downloading furniture from the city does not download somebody else's authority with it.
Every consequential crossing remains visible to the person. No amenity approves its own work. No egg, setup, or exchange listing can silently widen access. The point is not to make powerful computing impossible; it is to keep power legible and governed by the person whose computer it is.
A convivial machine
Orphic is intended to be free, open source, local-first, and made from files its user can inspect and keep. A healthy personal system should become more understandable and maintainable with use, not more dependent on the company or consultant who assembled it.
Modelwright Studio's work lives above that foundation: custom eggs, custom furniture, careful integration, migration, teaching, and ongoing stewardship for people who want another human tending the system with them. The client owns the result. If they learn to maintain it without the wright in the room, that is a sure way to know the build succeeded.
The platform is free. What a build buys is the fitting—an egg written for how one particular person actually works, and furniture built for their own workflows rather than a template with their name on it. That is what an Extended Mind Buildout is.
This is not an app that tries to contain the whole world. It is a total machine in miniature: a place where the computer can become more personal, more repairable, more expressive, and more convivial—one dwelling at a time.
Where this stands
Orphic_OE is under active development and is not yet available as a finished product. Its runtime, egg language, safety boundaries, sensory system, furniture model, and first proof dwellings are being built in public-minded plain files before the front door opens.
Founding clients are being taken now, at roughly half the standard rate. Part of what the founding price reflects is honest: you would be getting this early, on a foundation still being built, and helping decide what it becomes. See the offers, or apply—ten minutes, no call required.
